Commerical LPG gets cheaper by ₹7, jet fuel prices surge ahead of budget

In the latest monthly revision, aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices saw a steep hike of 5.6% on Saturday, while the cost of commercial LPG cylinders was marginally reduced. The revision follows fluctuations in global benchmark prices, impacting the cost of essential fuels.

The ATF price in the national capital jumped by ₹5,078.25 per kilolitre (kl), bringing the new price to ₹95,533.72 per kl. The surge comes after a minor reduction of 1.5% in January, which followed two consecutive hikes in November and December. Mumbai, another major aviation hub, also saw a price increase, with ATF now costing ₹89,318.90 per kl, up from ₹84,511.93 per kl.

While jet fuel became costlier, commercial LPG—widely used in hotels and restaurants—witnessed a slight drop. The price of a 19-kg cylinder in Delhi fell by ₹7, bringing it down to ₹1,797. This marks the second price cut following five consecutive monthly hikes last year. In January, the price was reduced by ₹14.5 per cylinder, though this followed a total increase of ₹172.5 across five previous hikes.

In other cities, commercial LPG now costs ₹1,749.50 per cylinder in Mumbai, ₹1,907 in Kolkata, and ₹1,959.50 in Chennai. However, household cooking gas prices remained unchanged, with the 14.2-kg domestic cylinder still priced at ₹803 in Delhi.

ATF and LPG rates vary across states due to differences in local taxes and VAT. Prices are revised on the first of each month based on the average international fuel prices and exchange rates. The three major state-owned oil firms—Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL)—carry out these adjustments.

Despite the fluctuations in ATF and LPG prices, petrol and diesel rates have remained unchanged since March 2024, when they were reduced by ₹2 per litre ahead of the general elections. Currently, petrol is priced at ₹94.72 per litre in Delhi, while diesel costs ₹87.62 per litre.
